Jack Dorsey to Speak at FOSDEM Amidst Controversy

FOSDEM Keynote Platforming

Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter and notable for his $5.6 billion net worth, is slated to deliver a keynote at FOSDEM. This event is a significant platform in the free software community, held in one of its largest venues, Janson, which accommodates over 1,500 attendees and reaches a global audience through live streaming. Past speakers have included influential names from Red Hat, the NLNet Foundation, and NASA, as well as community leaders and smaller projects reflecting the event’s ethos.

Challenges Linked to Dorsey

Some challenges faced by the free software community are associated with Dorsey. In 2023, FOSDEM hosted Kris Nóva from Hachyderm to discuss an exodus of Twitter users to the fediverse following Dorsey’s sale of Twitter to Elon Musk. This transition left the FOSS community managing an influx onto volunteer-operated servers, dealing with increased hate speech and harassment.

Dorsey’s Sponsorship and Business Ventures

Dorsey is likely given this platform due to his blockchain company sponsoring FOSDEM. Known for substantial revenue and profit growth, the company also laid off 1,000 employees and launched a bitcoin mining initiative, which has significant environmental repercussions.

Community Response

There is strong opposition within the FOSDEM community against Dorsey’s participation, with calls for billionaires to engage with FOSS through substantial donations rather than promoting business ventures. A proposal suggests a $250 million donation to tech funds, a gesture proportional to what small donors contribute annually to FOSS.

Planned Sit-In Protest

In protest of Dorsey’s keynote, a sit-in is being organized on the Janson stage during his scheduled time. The protest aims to disrupt the talk peacefully and is set to begin at 11:45 AM, before Dorsey’s time slot, and continue until 12:30 PM. Participants are encouraged to bring a book and join in organizing efforts to demonstrate against this keynote. Those interested in participating or assisting with organization are invited to contact the organizers via email.
